Millipedes
Millipedes (thousand-legged worm) havewhat looked like two rows of hair on their underside. These rows are not hair but legs. They are gray-brown and have a hard shell which makes a distinct “crunch” when they are stepped on. Millipeds are common on the Central Coast and are found in moist soil and vegetation. They usually feed on decaying plant matter. When populations get high, they will attack living plants, feeding on roots, stems, and leaves which touch the soil. Any vegetable or flower may be injured. If millipeds begin eating on your garden plants, it is usually because they have run out of plant debris. Adding compost, leaf mulch, etc., to soil should draw them away from the live plants.
