Skirt pruning, weed control and insecticide spray to knock down Fuller rose beetle
KOREA EXPORT PROGRAM FOR FULLER ROSE BEETLE
For the 2013-14 season Korea has agreed to accept California oranges from orchards where Fuller rose beetle (FRB) control measures have been implemented.
Required Control Measures:
1. Skirt pruning
2. Weed control under the tree to prevent bridging between the ground and the tree skirt
3. Apply at least one foliar spray to knock down adult populations
FOLIAR APPLICATION FOR FRB MUST BE MADE BY OCTOBER 15, 2013
Dr. Joseph Morse, UC Riverside, has stated that in order to reduce the potential for live FRB eggs on the fruit, trees should be sprayed 600 degree days prior to harvest. According to Morse, for harvest in the SJV (February to mid-April), the optimum time for treatment within the 600 degree day window is between now and October 15, with earlier being a bit safer than later should we have a cold October.
For oranges to be eligible for export to Korea the fruit must be packed through a packing house that has executed a compliance agreement stating that they will only source oranges from orchards where the required FRB control measures have been implemented, which includes making this foliar application.
