Cherimoya

Apr 22, 2011

A native to high elevation tropics, the cherimoya is a soft and delicate fruit with little acidity. In the United States, only the southern California coastal climates are conducive to cherimoya production.

Cherimoya trees require good drainage, a relatively frost-free environment, and a sunny location. In California most varieties do well extending 3 to 15 miles inland from the ocean. Further inland, care must be taken to select a variety that will do well away from the coast. Inland growers may also need to protect trees from extremely hot temperatures and dry winds.

Cherimoyas ripen 5-8 months after pollination. In California fruit ripens from November to June.
