Raccoons

Sep 23, 2011

Omnivorous and flexible when searching for den sites, raccoons adapt well to urban and suburban environments. They are mainly nocturnal creatures they can go undetected for some time. Because of the availability of food and den sites, urban and suburban raccoon populations can become very large. In some situations community or city-wide efforts are required for effective management.

Raccoons are clever and intelligent animals. Their front paws are handlike. Toes are long, flexible and considerably dexterous. They can unhook simple latches. Females searching for nesting sites may rip apart building materials to gain access to the attic or under the house.

Raccoons are powerful animals and can become vicious when cornered. They are known to carry a number of diseases and internal parasites.
