I had the opportunity last week to attend the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) annual meeting which was held in Portland OR this year. The meeting was really interesting as usual with many interesting oral and poster research presentations.
Two UCD weed scientists, Joe DiTomasso and Kassim Al-Khatib, were honored with the Society's Fellow Award - the highest level of recognition given by the group. More info on this award can be found here: http://www.wssa.net/WSSA/PressRoom/WSSA-2011-AwardWinners.htm
I've attached a research report presented by a UCD weed science post doctoral researcher on work with glyphosate-resistant Echinocloa colona or junglerice. The poster, entitled "Glyphosate Driven Selection Strikes Again: Investigating the Mechanism of Resistance in Echinochloa colona from California" by Rocío Alarcón-Reverte, Alejandro García, Marie Jasieniuk, Thomas Lanini, Bradley D. Hanson, Albert J. Fischer.
This poster has preliminary data generated by Rocio (postdoc) and Alejandro (PhD student) in Albert Fischer's group as a part of their UCD weed science research efforts and includes:
1. the first report of glyphosate-resistant junglerice in California
2. results of whole-plant dose-response experiments on the GR populations
3. results of assays on EPSPS enzyme activity of the GR and GS populations, and
4. results of EPSPS gene sequencing
This research project has been well conducted and presented and I'm looking forward to working with these scientists as they continue their work at UCD and beyond.
Congratulations to Joe and Kassim on being recognized as Fellows of the Weed Science Society of America.
Take care,
Brad
