Today, Ventura County Cooperative Extension's Maren Mochizuki shares with us about
this year' ASHS conference.
The American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) is a professional organization
created in 1903 to actively promote research and education in horticulture. The
annual conference provides an opportunity to present current research and interact
with premier scientists in the fields of pomology and small fruits, vegetable crops,
and ornamental and landscape plants, among others.
This year the annual conference was held in Palm Desert, CA from Aug. 2-5. I
attended presentations on many diverse topics of benefit to Ventura Co. agriculture
including:
- reducing water quality impacts from horticultural crop production
- the place of local food systems (local, national, global)
- the role of horticulture in managing plant invasiveness and reducing
new invasive introductions in the U.S.
- the influence of production practices on food safety
- biofumigation with mustard cover crops and mustard seed meal
- managing HLB and ACP in Florida citrus.
