Olive Oil Production in California

Mar 14, 2011

Olives are the most cultivated fruit crop world-wide. Recent transformations in commercial growing practices have had a positive impact on production in California. On-going UC research is expected to create additional improvements for growers and consumers of olive oil alike.

At this time, over 99% of the olive oil consumed in our county is imported. Industry improvements are expected to drastically change the market place within the next decade. It is anticipated that before long California will produce a significant amount of the olive oil consumed in the United Sates. These changes could bring an economic boost to our state.

The current edition of California Agriculture highlights some of the UC ANR research which has lead to higher quality oils, sustainable IPM practices, increased profits for growers as well as an overview of the history of olive cultivation.  Of local interest, it is believed the state’s first commercial olive oil mill was established in 1871 and located in Ventura County.

Further information about California’s olive oil industry can be found at the UC Davis Olive Center. The center’s upcoming seminars and courses can be view here.
