Over 272,000 acres were enrolled in the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) nationwide during fiscal year 2010. It is the highest single-year enrollment in the program’s history. There are currently 2.3 million acres in WRP across the nation.
Healthy wetlands are essential to a healthy environment and provide many benefits including improving water quality, providing habitat for wildlife and mitigating floods.
While 2.3 acres of preserved wetlands may seem like a lot, it is estimated that at one time in the contiguous states 220 million acres were covered by wetlands.
