Water. Rest. Shade.

Cal/OSHA’s 2012 Heat Illness Prevention Campaign provides multiple approaches to protect outdoor workers from heat illness. The campaign is a combination of education, outreach and enforcement efforts.

Education resources for employees are available in English, Spanish, Hmong, Punjabi and Mixteco. These free resources include DVD that features workers from agriculture, construction and landscaping occupations.

Employers can also find resources to help minimize heat illness.

In addition to the online resources, Cal/OSHA will be providing free, one-day programs designed for educators and leaders from community organizations who can help reach workers at risk for heat illness. These “Train-the-Trainer” programs will be held throughout the state, with a class in Ventura on June 15. Natural resource funding opportunities

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides many resources for public use. In addition to educational resources, the NRCS has some financial assistance programs available to help eligible landowners and agricultural producers plan and implement conservation practices.

These programs address natural resource concerns and include: saving energy; improving soil, water, plant, air, animal and related resources.

Specific programs include:                                                        

• Agricultural management assistance
• Agricultural water enhancement program
• Air quality initiative
• Cooperative conservation partnership initiative
• Conservation innovation grants
• Conservation stewardship program
• Environmental quality incentives program
• Emergency watershed protection program
• Wildlife habitat incentive program

Irrigation field day

UC Farm Advisor Oleg Daugovish will hold an Irrigation field day Thursday, April 19 from 9:00 am to 11:15 am.

Scheduled topics include:

• Update on conditional waiver and requirements for irrigated lands in Ventura County
• Evaluation of three differing irrigation regimes in California strawberry
• Salts and soil analyses in strawberry beds under different irrigation regimes
• Soil test results interpretation and corrective management
• View experiment plots onsite

VCALIG educational credits have been requested from the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Wellnesseveryday.org

The Ventura County Health Care Agency has a wonderful new online resource intended to improve the wellbeing of our community.

From their site:

“Wellness Everyday is committed to supporting the mental, physical and social health of all individuals living within our community. By providing education, resources and information on the latest programs and projects offered within our community, we believe the Wellness of our Ventura County community can belong to each of us.”

The site is nicely designed and easy to navigate. The three main sections: mind, body, and relationships each have many suggestions and links for further resources.

Subtopics include: parenting, exercise, nutrition, creativity, resilience, sleep, and much more. There is even a section dedicated to healthy aging. 

This fabulous online resource is available in Spanish.

Fumigant alternatives and soil-borne pathogens field day

On the morning of Tuesday, April 3 Oleg Daugovish will hold a fumigant alternatives and soil-borne pathogens field day. This event will be simultaneously translated into Spanish.

Scheduled topics include:

• Regulatory update on soil fumigation
• Alternative fumigants research update
• Soil borne pathogens Macrophomina and Fusarium: biology and management in strawberry
• Advances in steam application technology for soil disinfestation
• Update on Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation studies
• Research update from the California Strawberry Commission
• In-progress results from experiment on display
• View the plots with fumigant alternative treatments

Continuing education credits have been approved from DPR (Department of Pesticide Regulation).
