CCA, DPR CEUs on YOUR Time
Online training
The UC Statewide IPM Program provides online courses and webinars that reflect up-to-date pest management and pesticide safety information. Selected courses and webinars are approved for Continuing Education Units by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR), and some are also approved by the Structural Pest Control Board (SPCB), Certified Crop Advisor (CCA), Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (WCISA), and Arizona Department of Agriculture.
UC IPM online courses are hosted at eXtension virtual campus. Our courses are available each year from late January through December 30th. Annual maintenance is performed between January 1st and 31st. The courses can be accessed for free. However, if you need Continuing Education Units and a certificate, you will be charged a fee. To encourage taking courses earlier in the year, we offer 50% off the regular price from January through October 31st – use the code ipm50 at checkout.
Download the certificate immediately when you complete the course. Once courses are closed on December 30th, you will not be able to retrieve your certificate.

Reporting of CEUs for online courses is done at the end of each month and submitted to the appropriate agency. For webinars, reporting is done within 7 days of the event.

Food Safety Training - Online
Free Online Food Safety Training Sessions Available
Growers can complete free food safety training, as mandated by the U.S. Federal Department of Agriculture's new Produce Safety rule, from the comfort of their own home or business. Upon completion, attendees will receive a certificate from the Association of Food and Drug Officials verifying they have completed the training. The Food Safety Training Partnership — comprised of the Safe Food Alliance, Farm Employers Labor Service and California Farm Bureau — will host the webinars in February. Future webinar dates will be posted on their website. Online registration for the sessions is available.
The two-day sessions will include the following:
- Introduction to produce safety
- Worker health, hygiene and training
- Soil amendments
- Wildlife, domesticated animals and land use
- Agricultural water — production water and postharvest water
- Postharvest handling and sanitation
- How to develop a farm food safety plan
- Question and answer session — attendees are encouraged to share their experiences and have questions prepared
Attendees also will be provided with the following resources:
- A decision tree to help your determine how/if a regulation applies to your operation
- Record-keeping templates
- Tools to calculate “qualified exemption” applicability
- List of allowable water treatment compounds
- Water analysis calculation tools
In order to receive certification, attendees will be monitored during the session and must remain present throughout the course. For that reason, attendees will need a high-speed internet connection and computer/device with a webcam and microphone that must remain functional throughout the course.

Two additional RAs were added to the NMP implementation schedule as part of the October 2020 Water Quality Management Plan update: RA 11 (McGrath Lake Coastal) and RA 16 (Boulder Creek). Both are shown in green with a deadline of the end of April 2021.
Note: This workshop is intended for growers, and their representatives, who are looking to learn more about nitrogen management planning and/or intend to self-certify their plans. If you are only looking to fulfill the annual 2-hour continuing education requirement, there is an event approved for education credit on April 16 (below) and additional events will be announced as they are scheduled throughout the year.

June 9, 3-4 PM
During this one hour live webinar, UCCE Farm Advisors Lynn Wunderlich and Franz Niederholzer will explain the importance of proper calibration and go through the steps of properly calibrating an air blast sprayer. This information is critical for PCAs, applicators, and growers of trees and vines so that pesticides are applied to the target crop at the proper application rate with good coverage and minimal drift.

Wildfire Training for Farm Workers

How do wildfires affect the health and safety of people in agriculture?
Farmers and farmworkers are at a greater risk for exposure to wildfire smoke, ash, and chemical residue due to their work outdoors and long shifts, both during an active fire as well as during cleanup and recovery. Due to the nature of agricultural work, it is difficult for farmers and farmworkers to stop working due to wildfires. Lost workdays and the potential destruction of crops can have an economic effect on both farmers and workers.
Regardless of their proximity to wildfires, agricultural workers can struggle with stress and other mental health issues related to the effects of wildfires. Income, access to healthcare, and immigration concerns increase the vulnerability of the farmworker population.
When a wildfire occurs, what protections and information are employers required to provide to employees?
The newly adopted regulation §5141.1 “Protection from Wildfire Smoke,” which went into effect on July 29, 2019, uses the local air quality index (AQI) for PM2.5 to determine when worker protections are needed.

WCAHS provides safety resources on wildfire smoke for both employers and employees. An employer checklist outlining the above action items is available in English and Spanish. For training purposes, a double-sided poster and accompanying discussion guide are available in English and Spanish and are useful tools for tailgate trainings and safety reminders in the workplace.
WCAHS is developing an in-person training for agricultural employers and employees that provides a more comprehensive and in-depth review of the health effects of wildfire smoke exposure, worker protection procedures, and more.
